Over this past year, I've been revamping EVERYTHING.
I threw out all of my face washes and lotions that were just FILLED with chemicals (that I finally became aware of) and started doing oil and honey cleansing. And this was a big one - I treated my first cold with purely natural remedies such as Apple Cider Vinegar, Essential Oils, etc. rather than things like Nyquil, DayQuil, and Mucinex. It's SO exciting and freeing to be taking a more holistic and natural approach to taking care of my body!
Now this also applies to food. I'm definitely not perfect, and I still mess up and eat crap sometimes, but I'm STARTING to learn to take little things like what is in your taco seasoning more seriously. I used to see it as - "oh, it's just this once, I don't have time to make a taco seasoning so I'll just pick up a packet even though I know it has a couple bad ingredients in it, it's not like I'm doing this that often...".
This is a mindset we need to get out of! Even the "Sprouts Organic Taco Seasoning" had harmful additives. There is NO REASON why you need ingredients such as sugar, corn starch, maltodextrin, and partially hydrogenated soybean oil in your taco seasoning.
Here's the thing I'm getting at. It is all about PATTERNS AND HABITS. Not only was I harming my body (AND my husband's) by putting ingredients like that in it, but I wasn't creating a healthy mentality by saying "it's ok every once in a while" and I was creating a habit of compromising on what was going in my body.
My goal, and my challenge to you: every month, find something to stop compromising on.
Find a food that you eat regularly, that you know has harmful additives or ingredients, and focus on replacing that with either making your own, or finding a better source or alternative without those additives. STOP compromising.
It's all about baby steps. This last month I made my own almond milk for the first time. It tasted a little to "almondy", so I'm going to make another batch with some modifications, but it's progress! And at some point this month, I'm also going to make my own almond butter.
I am NOT perfect. But I AM on this journey with you of taking better care of our bodies and promoting health through making good food choices.
Now here's the taco seasoning recipe. This was adapted from a recipe by All Recipes. Not only does this have ALL NATURAL ingredients, but it's the best one out there! I tried out a TON of variations and other recipes and and when I put this batch in my most recent El Taco Loco Recipe (the main recipe I use taco seasoning for), my husband took one bite, looked up and said, "JENNA. This is it!" Gosh I love my hot taste tester! Enjoy!
The Best Homemade, All-Natural Taco Seasoning Mix
Prep Time: 1 minute Servings: 2
1 Tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons sea salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon red pepper
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1. Mix all ingredients in a spice jar or small mason jar.
2. Brown your grass fed beef (I usually also add a chopped onion and couple cloves of chopped garlic), and then add 1 1/2 TBSP for each pound of ground beef. Our grass fed beef always has a good amount of fat (and since it's grass fed I don't drain it), but if your ground beef is leaner and doesn't have the extra fat, add 1/4 c water. Mix well to ensure an even coating on ground beef. I like to let the mixture simmer for a couple minutes to make sure that the ground beef has fully absorbed this wonderfulness. Lastly, I always taste a little bit of the cooked ground beef to ensure that there is enough salt, so I encourage you to do that and sprinkle on a little more salt if desired.
3. Enjoy! If you want to make a large batch of this, I just multiply everything by 4 to make it really easy. And then you have some stocked up for the future!
What is a something that you want to challenge yourself to stop compromising on?
