About 5 years ago my husband and I began the switch to eating healthier, more nutrient dense food and quickly learned the importance of reading the labels and ingredients on everything we were putting in our bodies. As I continued on my journey, I later realized that since the skin is the largest organ of our bodies and absorbs a large part of what is put on it into the blood stream, it was just as important to start evaluating what I was also putting ON my body!
Previously, I had assumed that because a product was a good brand and decently priced that it should be ok to use. I trusted that the FDA wouldn’t allow it be on the shelf if it wasn’t safe. Olay was my go-to for face lotion, St. Ives for face wash and body lotion, Neutrogena for sunscreen, etc. As soon I actually started looking into their ingredients I was shocked at how wrong my original assumptions were. Sadly enough, companies are allowed to use known toxins—ingredients that have been linked to cancer, reproductive issues, and hormone disruption—without even disclosing all of the ingredients to us! Did you know…
30?! Those statistics astonished me! As I started digging deeper I started finding more and more articles about how toxic and harmful the majority of skincare and makeup products are for ourselves and our families… these are just a few that were particularly impactful:
"Johnson & Johnson Is Just the Tip of the Toxic Iceberg" by Time.com - did you know that for DECADES, Johnson and Johnson’s sold their talcum-based Baby Powder - knowing that it caused ovarian cancer? In Europe, you won’t find talc in baby powders, the skin-lightening ingredient hydroquinone in skin creams, lead acetate in hair dye, formaldehyde and 1,4 dioxane in baby shampoos and bath products, or many other toxic substances because they are banned from personal care products. Here, you can find those substances in personal care products, with no health warnings.
"Childhood Cancer: More Evidence Points to Chemical Exposure" by ewg.org - This article talks about how many studies are finding a strong connection between environmental toxins/chemicals and how they can turn on and off specific genes in our bodies that contribute to cancer. With more than 80,000 commercially available chemicals on the market today in the USA and the great majority never having been tested for safety (the opposite of how chemicals are regulated in Europe where manufacturers must prove a chemical is safe before introducing it to commerce), it is up to us to make sure the products we are using on ourselves and our families do NOT have harmful chemicals.
Poison lips? Troubling levels of toxic metals found in cosmetics - In this 2013 study by UC Berkeley Researchers, they found lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other metals in many popular brands of lipsticks and lip glosses commonly found in drugstores and department stores. The study also noted that children are especially susceptible to heavy metal accumulation and should not play with make up. Think of all the young girls that apply make-up daily or even multiple times a day?
I finally starting making the connection that what we use on our bodies - foundation to sunscreen to face wash and lotion - does impact our health!
I decided to do something about it and started replacing all of my skincare products with more natural alternatives. After a year of trying DIY and countless different companies/products, I found a company who cares about ingredients as much as I do and that creates the products that I need and that work - Beautycounter.
Beautycounter has banned more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals, all while delivering products that are safe and perform amazingly. Not only do love their safe products through, but I also deeply connect with Beautycounter's vision to get safe products into the hands of everyone and their dedication and work towards real change and tighter regulations in the USA beauty industry. They are taking action in Washington and working to reform the current laws, in hopes that other skin care companies will follow their strict safety guidelines!
Please take the 3 minutes to watch this short video that describes the mission of Beautycounter as a company - along with their ingredient selection process and standards.
I encourage you to take a closer look at what's in your skin care and makeup products! You can do this by starting to read the labels and by looking up your your your current products on EWG's Skin Deep Database. It is my go-to resource for researching product safety and I love that every Beautycounter product is rated between 1-2 on it. If your current products are scoring between 1-2, then that’s great! If not, then it might be time to consider switching to safer products.
Beautycounter’s “Never List” is the 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals that they will never use as ingredients in their products.
Below is a very simplified and helpful version of the ingredients that are most harmful to check and make sure are not in your current products. Check out Beautycounter to learn more and start replacing your current products with high performing, cleaner, and safer products that you can trust. I also love that they list every ingredient in each product along with how they source it!
Here are a few of my favorite Beautycounter products that I use daily!
Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Cream
This is my favorite day cream from Beautycounter. It is light, but extremely moisturizing (it adapts to your skin’s needs throughout the day) and perfect as a base for the dew skin tinted moisturizer (if you want just a glow and SPF) or their tint skin foundation if you want more coverage.
Overnight Resurfacing Peel
This peel is a game changer and one of our bestsellers! It is made without synthetic fragrances, PEGs, or formaldehyde-based preservatives commonly found in peels and uses both resurfacing acids and soothing acids that hydrate, replenish, and protect skin without drying it out or causing irritation. My own skin has changed radically and I’ve had SO many clients also rave about the amazing results they’ve seen in their skin, reducing sun spots, pores, and wrinkles!
Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer
My morning regimen is the countermatch day cream followed by a pump of this tinted moisturizer.
It gives me a sheer coverage that makes me feel “put together”, the perfect dewy glow, and SPF 20 protection (using non-nano zinc oxide of course).
Rejuvenating Night & Eye Cream
This night cream and eye cream is from our anti-aging line and work wonders to reduce the appearance of pores, lines, and wrinkles while also firming and nourishing the skin and the green tea extract in the eye cream helps combat puffiness. I love the fact that these products are so concentrated, so a little goes a long way and they last a long time!
Charcoal Cleansing Bar
I use this as my face wash every night (P.S. - this bar lasts me an entire year)! It is made with purifying Japanese binchotan charcoal, antioxidant-rich organic green tea, and hydrating organic coconut oil and gently cleanses and absorbs impurities in your skin without drying it out.
This is definitely one of my favorites as it has so many uses as a daily cleanser, makeup. remover, or what I use it for the most - deeply hydrating overnight mask. It also promotes a brighter complexion with radiance-boosting vitamin C.
My routine at night is to wash with the charcoal cleansing bar, then put on either the overnight resurfacing peel followed by the rejuvenating night and eye cream or Cleansing Balm with eye cream, alternating nights between those.
Countersun Mineral Sunscreen
This sunscreen is what first brought me to BC! I had been searching for a non-nano zinc oxide sunscreen (extremely important since it’s a physical that sits on top of the skin instead of being absorbed into it like chemical blockers do). I tried countless brands and BC was the first one that not only worked but also rubbed in and didn’t leave us looking like ghosts!
Baby Bundle Collection
My favorite products for babies! This has the gentle All-Over Wash (tear-free body and hair cleanser), Soothing Oil (a quick-absorbing skin nourisher), and Daily Protective Balm. I LOVE the Baby Balm due to it’s man uses as a diaper cream, deep moisturizer for really dry skin or even for eczema. I’ve had multiple friends who had babies with eczema and were told by their doctor that their only option to clear it up was by using steroids but were able to avoid that by using this!
